PENGKALAN CHEPA November 4 | Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has identified three indicators for assessing the level of development of a group of traders or entrepreneurs in measuring the potential or desire of women in the state of Kelantan to grow their business to a higher level until to the international level, ” explained the Director of UMK Entrepreneurship Institute (UMK EI), Prof. Dr. Nik Maheran Nik Muhammad.

She said based on previous research and preliminary observations conducted in April 2019, some Kelantanese women were more comfortable doing business for their own development. Meanwhile, there are three groups of businesswomen in Kota Bharu and around Kelantan who have different views and perspectives to boost their business to grow and reach the overseas market.

"The first group is a group of businesswomen that open a business solely for the purpose of living, the second group is doing business as a source of income and able to travel and the business can be passed on to three generations.

“While the third group is a female entrepreneur who owns a premise in Kota Bharu and at the same time owns a shop in Kuala Lumpur and intends to expand her business internationally.

“The findings of the study are the best mechanism for the study by UMK to identify the constraints of businesswomen or women entrepreneurs to develop themselves who have to face various challenges thus limiting their desire to grow their business. Through this study, UMK EI seeks to find a solution and the results will be known in the near future, ” she said at the opening of the Women Economic Empowerment Seminar at the Dewan Keusahawanan Hall, UMK City Campus, Pengkalan Chepa, on October 4, 2019.

Kelantan Tengku Puan Temenggong, YBM Puan Sri Dato 'Tunku Noor Hayati Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj had set out and graced her presence to officiate the whole day-long seminar attended by 400 participants comprising entrepreneurs, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), UMK staff and students.

Also took place was a keynote address by the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Equal Up Strategies, Miss Gretta Schetller. Meanwhile, the forum panel members are Executive Chairman of Pharmaniaga Berhad, Datuk Dr. Hafsah Hashim, Cultural Figure, Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr. Nik Safiah Karim, Director-General of Higher Education Department, Ministry of Education, Datuk Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir, Kelantan Women's Welfare and Development Exco, YB Hjh Mumtaz Md Nawi and Salina Chief Executive Officer & Association PR, Ms. Selina Yeop Johari.

According to Prof. Dr. Nik Maheran, organising this seminar also serves as a platform for experts from various backgrounds to share experiences and knowledge that can inspire other women.

She believes that one of the most effective ways to increase the average income of a B40 household is with the opportunities and assistance to enter the job or business market. This coincides with one of the goals of organising the programme today, by giving the audience exposure on how to form an entrepreneurial idea among women.

“As we know, the government has put in place programmes and initiatives to boost the economy of women. For example, TEKUN, Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia, other financial aid sectors. This coincides with the objective of organising the programme, which is to expose today's audience to the opportunities and assistance provided in helping to empower women's economy.

"The impact of this seminar is to help increase the income of a B40 household, ensuring that women have access to education, promotion and employment and as early preparation for women in this country to face the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0)," she said.
