PASIR PUTEH December 17 I A graduate from the Faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage (FTKW) desire to hold a degree at a convocation finally being realised by Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) when a special Mini Convocation event was held at his family home in Kampung Kiok, Baka, Machang , Kelantan, today.

Abdul Halim Mat Hassan, 25, who was diagnosed with nasal cavity cancer was seen touched and moved sharing his joy on his graduation day when UMK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato 'Ts. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail himself handed the degree scroll to him witnessed by his parents, Mariah Ismail, 59, and Mat Hassan Hamad, 63, and his grandmother, Zainab Sulaiman, 109, who was ill.

Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Mohd Rafi Yaacob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Ts. Dr. Zaliman Sauli, Dean of FTKW, Assoc. Prof. Ahamad Tarmizi Azizan and UMK Registrar, Pn. Mazula Sabudin.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Heritage Study with Honours (Heritage Literature) scroll giving ceremony was held in full customary ceremony by the master of ceremonies at 3.30pm.

According to Pro. Dato 'Ts. Dr Noor Azizi said the mini-convocation was held on the grounds of UMK's concern and initiative as Abdul Halim was unable to attend the 9th Convocation Ceremony held on October 19, 2019, to receive his degree due to unavoidable health problems.

Following this, the Vice Chancellor's Office (Academic and International) and the Vice Chancellor's Office (Student Affairs and Alumni) as well as the UMK's Faculty of Creative and Heritage Technology took the approach of having a symbolic convocation to celebrate Abdul Halim's graduation day.

“We appreciate Abdul Halim’s efforts who have been working hard to complete his study for a degree.
"I pray that Abdul Halim will continue to be given the strength to fight the disease he has suffered and to be cured," he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Halim expresses his gratitude and thanks to UMK for realising his dream of wearing a convocation robe and receiving a degree today.

He was excited by the mini-convocation ceremony and thanked both parents and families who have sacrificed so much over the years.

“I will be strong to face all this and will continue this life. The welcoming ceremony of the convocation ceremony at home has to be one of the most memorable moments,” he said.

Abdul Halim said he had to postpone his studies because he was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 after receiving treatment at the Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab (HPRZ) before receiving follow up treatment at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM).

“After being diagnosed with cancer, I postponed my studies to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy”.

"I had to undergo two treatments a year including 36 radiotherapy and seven rounds of chemotherapy to prevent the cancer cells from spreading and at the same time the doctors had to make a hole in my neck for the respiratory tract," he said.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Ahamad Tarmizi said Abdul Halim was an active and outstanding FTKW student in academic achievement with a Cumulative Grade Average (CGPA) of 3.22.

He also joined the uniformed body and was successfully appointed as the Inspector / KS Kor SUKSIS Universiti Awam at the INSP / KS SUKSIS End of Training and Certificate Giving Ceremony at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

“Abdul Halim is also an active student in the FTKW Literature Club and has served as an Enumerator and a Tuition Teacher for the B40 group under the programme organised by the UMK Institute for Research and Poverty (INSPEK). Also, he is a Member of the UMK Student Peer Guidance Club,” he said.
