UMK AND STATE GOVERNMENT TO BUILD DOKONG VINEGAR FACTORY

BACHOK 3 February I Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and the Kelantan State Government will work together to build a vinegar processing plant based on rambutan and dokong to address the problem of seasonal fruit dumping and help farmers increase their income while diversifying products from agricultural produce especially fruits.

Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Biotechnology, Green Technology and Environment, YB. Haj Tuan Mohd Saripudin Tuan Ismail said through the construction of the plant which is expected to be operational in September 2020, it will be able to process 300 pounds of fruit in a day.

He said based on studies in terms of product quality, this vinegar product was able to market internationally.

“The State Government through the Kelantan State Agricultural Corporation has provided an initial fund of RM250, 000.00 to ensure complete operation of the plant with facilities and processing machines in Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Area operating as scheduled.

"The research lab collaboration has also diversified dokong and rambutan based products such as gels and juices and other food products," he said.

Earlier, YB. Hj. Tuan Mohd Saripudin officiated the opening ceremony of the Research and Innovation Carnival (CRI) organised by the Centre for Research and Innovation Management, Vice Chancellor's Office (Research and Innovation) at the Dewan Tuanku Canselor Hall, UMK Bachok Campus, Kelantan, which runs from 3 to 4 February 2020 (Monday - Tuesday).

The 2019 CRI Carnival brings together 145 research and innovation products from 102 participants from UMK researchers, 23 participants from UMK students, and 21 participating students from schools around Kelantan on display during the annual carnival.

At the event, he also completed the launch of the Research Management System (RMS), a system for research management and the launch of Crowdfunding, a platform for raising funds from the public, individuals or groups to carry out projects, develop research and give groups opportunities to achieve their dreams and the launch of the IdeaTon, UMK Innovation Project which inspired the development of UMK staff mindset in line with the creation of an excellent work culture in organisational governance.

Also present was the UMK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Ts. Dr. Arham Abdullah, Deputy Chairman of Agriculture Committee, Agro-based Industry, Biotechnology, Green Technology and Environment, YB. En. Abdul Aziz Kadir.

Also present, Senior Director of Research and Innovation Management Center, Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Ziad Bin Sulaiman, Director of Kelantan Utilities Mubaarakan Holdings Sdn. Bhd., Tn. Hj Mahadi Hj. Mokhtar and Deputy Director of Kelantan State Economic Planning Unit En. Azman bin Hj Awang.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Noor Azizi said this year's CRI 2019 carnival was to encourage on-going research and innovation towards commercialisation and to cultivate innovative and impactful research for the local community.

He said CRI 2019 was relevant to the current stream of achievement in research and innovation where universities, academics and industry stakeholders, played an important role. Advances in sustainable research and innovation and responsiveness to the national education agenda will have an impact on the progress of the people and the nation.

“Research can be defined as a systematic and disciplined activity undertaken to create and develop knowledge. It involves various forms across disciplines, including the discovery of scientific and social research, the creation or refinement of concepts and theories, techniques or compositions, or expanding current understanding through critical analysis,” he said.

He added that this research and innovation should be practised among educators in this country as the current teaching and learning concepts are not only directed at providing information from teachers but students themselves need to get relevant information on anything that is learned through various sources, especially in virtual.

“In other words, the concept of teaching and learning requires students to learn on their own and not just be the recipient of knowledge. They need to change to co-curators of Knowledge as technology advances,” he explained.

He also mentioned the use of RMS, a system for managing research projects at UMK by the Research Management Division (RMD) in collaboration with the Centre for Computer and Informatics (CCI).

Phase 1 of the RMS operated on November 28, 2019, offering UMK-Fund, UMK Pro, UMK-Match and UMK-Sir research grants. This RMS system provides research grant application services faster and easier than ever before using manual forms.

As a result of the integration of this system with UMK's E-Comm system, information on the applicant's profile can be obtained without filling out the form. Through this system, the application information is kept neat and tidy and can serve as a medium for bank proposals. The system is seen as a comprehensive system that not only involves the application, evaluation and monitoring of research grants but can also be the medium for assessing the performance of lecturers, reporting to universities, intellectual property registers and journals in the future.

Meanwhile, the IdeaTon UMK Innovation Project is a platform for the UMK Registrar Office through the Talent Management and Excellence Division and the Vice Chancellor's Office (Research and Innovation) aimed at educating UMK staff to always have a healthy, intelligent and active mind by leveraging their creative ideas addressed to the right channel and platform.

The idea was developed by the UMK Registrar Office based on the inspiration and aspirations of the Higher Education Ministry through the KPT Idea Bank Innovation Project in 2014 and 2015 (Formerly known as the Ministry of Higher Education) in an effort to build UMK staff mindset in parallel with the formation of an excellent work culture in organisational governance.

This innovation project is open to all UMK staff or residents whose participation is voluntary and the ideas that need to be addressed have to be in line with the theme that has been submitted on a monthly basis. These ideas can be channelled through two (2) methods, which are through a replica of the Idea Innovation located in the Registrar's Office lobby and through the Padlet application (https://padlet.com/bakat/BAKAT_UMKIdeaTon).

The project will directly produce UMK citizens who have the skills and leadership as well as good personalities and the ability to interpret ideas for the purpose of University development. Any of the best ideas that are successfully selected will be translated and subsequently implemented at UMK.
