KPDNHEP Food Bank Program Launched At UMK

WhatsApp Image 2019 11 19 at 5.47.00 AM 1

BACHOK November | Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) became the 21st University to benefit from the ' Siswa Food Bank ' programme to fulfil the target of participation of all 20 universities through initiatives by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).

The UMK Siswa Food Bank programme is the brainchild of Home Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Dato 'Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, with the main objective of providing food assistance to needy students.

In line with that goal, Dato 'Seri Saifuddin Nasution today launched the UMK Siswa Pantri Food Bank located at the Laman Monsoon, UMK Bachok, Kelantan.

According to Dato 'Seri Saifuddin Nasution, 6,700 students came from the lowest 40 per cent (B40) households income involving 22 public universities (UA) benefited from the Siswa Food Bank programme launched at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) earlier this year.

He said the implementation of the Siswa Food Bank programme had the support of 430 strategic partners from various companies that contributed to the various food-based and daily needs of the students.
“The initiative aims to provide food assistance to needy students while helping to ease the cost of living expenses borne by students. The programme also welcomes the involvement of students, especially student associations, in implementing the concept, "From Student to Student," he said after completing the Ministerial Lecture Series Programme and the launching of UMK Siswa Food Bank in collaboration with KPDNHEP, the Food Bank Foundation and the Food Aid Foundation.

Meanwhile, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Ts. Dr. Zaliman Sauli said UMK Siswa Pantri Food Bank have been in operation since May 2019. The programme has benefited 200 UMK students from asnaf and B40 group who have been identified and are eligible for assistance from the programme.
He said the programme was a 3-in-1 strategy initiated by the Federal Government to ease the burden of the cost of living of the people, especially the less fortunate or the B40 group.

“The programme builds on the ecosystem that enables civil society and all parties to work together to address the issue of food insecurity in an organised and focused manner. In fact, the programme is a platform for governments, public universities, non-governmental organisations, communities and corporations to work together.
“Siswa Food Bank, in particular, is a medium for students to play the role of managing the Food Bank programme directly. In the context of UMK, I believe that UMK is able to manage the Siswa Food Bank programme well. UMK has a dedicated system that focuses on strengthening the Siswa Food Bank management system, although there is still room for improvement, ”he said.

According to Prof. Ts. Dr. Zaliman, this programme successfully addresses the issue of malnutrition, especially among students of low-income families. This will directly help them to focus on their study at the university.

In the meantime, UMK works with all parties, including KPDNHEP, to ensure that the programme truly benefits the target group.
Previously, through the "Gerobok Makanan" brand, UMK consistently provided food for low-income students in UMK. This effort was jointly made between the Islamic Centre, the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, and the UMK Student Representative Council.

“Among the strategies that have been implemented is to place the necessary food in strategic areas, such as in the residential colleges of students and mosques. UMK also makes visits to student houses, either student rentals or to their family members' homes,” he said.
