JELI 6 July |A proposal on establishing the National Business Incubator (NBI) at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) is expected to benefit local students, staff and entrepreneurs especially as laboratories, mentoring centres and workplaces for the development of innovative ideas among students and staff to produce products that can be commercialized overseas.

UMK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail said through the expertise and cooperation of the industry, UMK was confident and able to lead the entrepreneurial agenda not only at the UMK level but also at the national level.

He said that through high commitment and hard work, everyone was also able to realize the dream of becoming a renowned entrepreneurial university in the region. “UMK has eight incubators in the form of programme base, innovation base and business / commercialization base that support student entrepreneurship activities to be better managed and more systematic”.

“The Incubator Centre will also be developed as a co-working space for student and alumni companies (start-ups), mentoring and coaching space and a platform for entrepreneurs (Entrepreneur in Residence @ E-I-R) to share ideas and experiences in the process developing a market-driven product,” he said in a speech during the Working Visit of Deputy Higher Education Minister Dato’ Mansor Othman to UMK at Monsoon Hall, UMK Bachok, on July 5, 2020.

Earlier, a briefing on the establishment of the National Business Incubator (NBI) by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Ts. Dr. Arham Abdullah to Dato’ Mansor and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed was held at the UMK Jeli Campus. He was briefed on the essence of the NBI before being taken to visit areas around campus, especially the entrepreneurial projects available at the UMK Jeli Campus.

Meanwhile, Dato’ Mansor said the establishment of the' National Business Incubator’ Hub at UMK enabled the University to play an important role in building human capital capacity, innovation and commercialization of products including innovation in ICT. “I believe UMK can lead this NBI by turning it into a hub for developing experts in related fields such as E-Commerce, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Cloud Computing.

“Through UMK's cooperation with the state government, Kelantan can be dubbed as Hangzhou or Shenzen city in China well known for Alibaba and Tencent or Hyderabad in India known as Information Technology city. “The ministry will always provide support in any form of assistance to boost innovation in entrepreneurship including ICT,” he said.

According to Dato’ Mansor, UMK's high commitment will be seen as an entrepreneurial reference point in line with the establishment of UMK as an entrepreneurial-focused university. He said the existence of UMK could be felt not only to students but to the people of Kelantan in particular and Malaysia in general.

“UMK needs to take the initiative to set up local referral centres for local and national entrepreneurs and even reach the ASEAN and Asian levels.

“I believe this initiative can be done through collaboration with successful entrepreneurs in Malaysia through the Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) concept. At the KPT level, maybe we can reinforce the CEO @ Faculty programme especially in promoting entrepreneurship as one of the main agendas for the country, ” he said.

At the same event, Dato’ Mansor completed the opening of the GIG @ UMK Economic Centre at Tok Dalang, Faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage (FTKW).

The GIG Economy Programme is a collaboration between FTKW with the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) in organizing workshops, short courses and training on digital entrepreneurship, freelancing, remote working for students and the general public.
