UMK, FIRST UNIVERSITY TO ESTABLISH NIOSH@UMK LEARNING CENTRE

BACHOK 19 January I Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) through the Occupational Safety and Health Management Centre (CMEOSH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Occupational Safety and Health Institute (NIOSH) to raise awareness of occupational safety and health among workers in this country.

The signing of the MoU was signed by UMK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato 'Ts. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail while NIOSH is represented by NIOSH Executive Director, YB. Haji Ayop Salleh, at Seminar Room 2, Level 2, UMK Bachok Chancellery Building, on January 19, 2020.

The event was also attended by the Chairman of NIOSH, YB. Alice Lau Kiong Yieng and UMK Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Ts. Dr. Arham Abdullah |

The signed MoU also takes into account the establishment of the NIOSH @ UMK Training Centre to enable the study of occupational safety and health in the country. At the event, NIOSH satellite office key giving ceremony was held at UMK City Campus, Pengkalan Chepa in early 2020.

Prof. Dato 'Ts. Dr. Noor Azizi said through the strategic cooperation of UMK-NIOSH the industry concept of the university will showcase UMK's strength and expertise in building industry and society while making UMK the first Entrepreneurial University in leading aspects of occupational safety and employee health among Institutions of Higher Education in the country.

He said the collaboration also provided an opportunity for UMK and NIOSH residents to collaborate in research related to the Occupational Safety and Health Programme (OSH) and to provide data, information and expertise for OSH-related publications.

"Both sides have agreed to work together to build the capacity of the DF's specialist through exchange and appointment of Visiting Technical Specialists as well as the development of future facilities including the construction of the NIOSH-UMK Collaborative Laboratory at the NIOSH East Coast Regional Office in Kerteh," he said.

He added that the UMK's success in the workers' safety and health programme began after receiving the National Occupational Safety and Health (Higher Institution Education Category) Award 2018, presented by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB. Dato 'Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr. Wan Ismail, last year.

“UMK continues to step up and take on the challenge of gaining international recognition and on November 26, 2019, UMK has been certified with the ISO 45001: 2018 certification.

“Various challenges and sacrifices have been made in ensuring that UMK is the catalyst for best OSH practice among the Public Universities in Malaysia. This also shows that UMK is an organisation that practices occupational safety and health in accordance with international standards,” he said.

Meanwhile, YB Alice Lau Kiong Yieng said the collaboration was a very important platform to further enhance the research output of the OSH in this country, understood by UMK as a thriving public higher education institution, and active in conducting OSH-related research.

She said that in line with the initiatives implemented by NIOSH in the same field, this cooperation is very effective as it will also provide positive benefits to employers and employees especially in reducing the risk of workplace accidents.

“Through the sharing of expertise and ideas between NIOSH and the UMK, it also enables more effective OSH studies and solutions to be developed in accordance with the National Occupational Safety and Health Policy (DKKPN) aimed at protecting workers' rights in a safe, healthy and conducive work environment.

“I believe the MoU signed today will enable both parties to explore greater space and opportunities when the facilities and expertise in the OSH are shared. Combined with the skills and experience of the UMK academic staff and NIOSH specialists will be able to produce excellent results to increase the level of OSH and awareness of it and thus reduce employment accidents nationwide,” she said.
