BACHOK 19 April  I The swift action of members of the Bachok Fire and Rescue Department and Tok Bali successfully prevented a fire from spreading in the Gelam forest area of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Bachok, in the early morning of 18 April 2020.
UMK Head of Security, En. Wan Salman said a team from Tok Bali Fire and Rescue Station (Pasir Puteh) arrived at the scene at 11.30 after receiving an emergency call at 11:15 am.
He said a fire engine with the strength of eight firefighters from the Tok Bali Fire and Rescue Station managed to control the fire from spreading into the larger forest area at the UMK Bachok campus.
“The incident was spotted around 10.20am by the Patrol Unit Head Shift after seeing smoke in the area near the UMK deer farm.
“Fire fighting operations were later joined by the Bachok Fire and Rescue team with 12 firefighters and two fire engines. The operation to extinguish and control the fire took about five hours and the fire was extinguished at 6.30pm,” he said.
According to En. Wan Salman, the cause of the incident is still under investigation. The incident, however, did not involve any buildings near UMK as the fire was successfully controlled from spreading.
He said firefighters and the UMK Security Unit were still monitoring to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
“During the operation, we were informed that there are some obstacles to putting out fires because of the fire incident took place deep in the forest," he said.
Meanwhile, En. Wan Salman called for the cooperation of the villagers in UMK Bachok area together to protect the environment, especially the Gelam forest.
“This is important because these Gelam trees areas retain the much needed human and environmental resources. This Gelam forest area is also important in the agricultural sector in Bachok area,” he said.
UMK Bachok is 776 acres and is predominantly Gelam Forest Reserve. The presence of this jungle gives UMK a unique edge because it does not exist in any other public university. The area involved in the fire is approximately 8 acres.
"The Gelam forest is home to many species of birds as well as herbs for traditional medicine. There are also beehives that we believe have attracted certain people to enter this UMK forest area secretly. We hope for the public to take care of the environment and appreciate the uniqueness of this Gelam forest as it is hard to find anywhere else. "
According to him, the fire incident was the worst in UMK Bachok's history as it’s constantly facing fire threat from open burning activity by outsiders.
