The establishment of a university in Kelantan was made as a component in the Ninth Malaysia Plan to support the quality human capital development in the higher education sector. The federal agreement was announced by the Prime Minister on the 31 March 2006 in the Ninth Malaysia Plan proposal.
The establishment of the university was approved in the Cabinet Meeting on the 14 June 2006.
The establishment of this university was recorded in the country's legislative history after it was gazetted on 7 December 2006, P.U.(A) 415 as a university with the name and title as "Universiti Malaysia Kelantan" effective on 1 September 2006
The first Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan was Prof. Dato' Ir. Dr. Zainai bin Mohamed, who was appointed on 1 October 2006.
Section 10 under University Malaysia Kelantan Constitution in accordance with section 8 (1) Schedule 1 of the University and University Colleges Act 1971 (Act 30), Seri Paduka Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to His Majesty Tuanku Ismail Petra Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yahya Petra, Al-Sultan Kelantan, appointed as the first Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan from 1 May 2007 to 30 April 2012
Appointment of Senate as the main academic body of the University was established under section 22 , University Malaysia Kelantan Constitution . The First Senate Meeting was held on 19 June 2007 at The Summit Hotel, Subang Jaya, Selangor
The Top Management of the university also known as University Executive Committee was established based on University Malaysia Kelantan Constitution under section 21. The first meeting was held on 19 June 2007 at The Summit Hotel, Subang Jaya, Selangor
The Board Directors of the University is established based on section 17 of University Malaysia Kelantan Constitution. The First University Board Meeting was held on 22 June 2007 at the PNB Darby Park Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
The temporary campus of UMK at Taman Bendahara began its official operation on 1 July 2007 with the registration of 295 pioneering students
University has introduced UMK logo on 16 March 2008.
"Terbilang UMK" song was introduced on 8 June 2008. by "Ariffin bin Pawanchik" and lyrics written by "Marwan bin Ismail".
The University has officially introduced its ceremonial equipment on August 10, 2008 in conjunction with the Proclamation Ceremony of His Majesty Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Chancellor
UMK's first convocation was held 19 September 2011 at Grand Riverview Hotel, Kota Bharu, Kelantan
